Thanks to MJSBLOG for this  article about the final three: Jordin, Blake and Melinda!!!

http://mjsbigblog.com/
Homecoming: Update

Judges Song Choice:

  • Simon Cowell chose Jordin Sparks’ song- “Wishing on a Star” by Rose Royce.  Also, Jordin told classmates that her personal song choice would be a reprise of “I Who Have Nothing”–her song pick for British Invasion night.
  • Paula Abdul chose Blake Lewis’s song–”Roxanne” by the Police.
  • Randy Jackson chose Melinda Doolittle’s song, “I Believe in You and Me” by Whitney Houston.

So, we have the three judges song choices, and one personal choice…what do you think? I can’t believe Randy picked such a boring song for Melinda. Afterward, he’ll prolly tell her, “Bad song choice dude, you should never sing Whitney.” Heh. I think Blake’s song choice is good…but he should sing it relatively straight without the beatboxing.  It could be killer. I love that he’s singing about prostitution. HA. Jordin is singing two ballads so far.  “Wish Upon a Star” is…not very challenging and has really dumb lyrics (I’m wishing on a star, I’m wishing on a dream, I’m wishing on a rainbow. Kind of sounds like a coronation song. Bleah.) Will Clive’s choice make it 3?  I would not be surprised, because ballads are her thing…

Blake Lewis has beautiful weather and a big crowd for his mini-concert in Seattle today.  The local Fox affiliate is updating a picture page and has video–an interview and performance.  He sings the 311 song “All Mixed Up” plus an original tune with a loop machine and chaos pad.  For his mini-concert, Blake sang 5 songs, including Keane’s “Somewhere Only We Know,” Jamiroquai’s “Virtual Insanity,” an original song, “She Loves The Way,” and he backed up special guest Sir Mix-A-Lot on the rapper’s famous “Baby Got Back.”  In an interview this morning, he said that he thought Jordin Sparks would take it all, but that his goal was to make the Top 10 and then the Top 4.  ETA:  Buddy TV has some video, mp3s (of the entire concert) and pictures from Blake’s mini-concert up on their site.  Later, he sang the national anthem before the Seattle Mariners baseball game.

Melinda Doolittle was met by an enthusiastic crowd at Belmont University where she was a student.  She sang “Home” and “Since You’ve Been Gone.”  More coverage plus pictures from her trip to Belmont. They named a street after her, “Melinda Doolittle Way.”  More from the Washington Post.  Melinda’s mom says she was tone deaf until she was in the 7th grade…  Also, she was a Belmont University mascot, “She wore a hot, sweaty bear costume and jumped around in the name of school spirit.”

Jordin Sparks was met by fans at her high school today.  The Phoenix Fox station is covering her homecoming here.  More on Jordin’s homecoming here. She sang two songs, “Broken Wing” and “To Love Somebody.”  At the Westgate Mall rally, she was greeted by the city’s sports teams, including Phoenix Coyotes coach, Wayne Gretzke met the mayor, and sang Give Me One Reason, Heartbreaker and I Who Have Nothing.  You can watch some videos of her performing at Westgate here.

thanks Team Plaid

We are definitely working together -- working on a record together. She sings so magnificently, it's just amazing -David Foster-

Sounds like Randy has a LOT of confidence in Melinda. Okay, so do I. And as for Wishing On A Star, as we all know, it's possible to take an almost treacley sweet song (even one that's 60 years old) and somehow yank it up into the present and knock eveyrone's socks off just by bringing your own personal magic to it. So Jordin's got her work cut out for her, but the kid's talented, so we'll see. Things are really getting interesting...

Hey Groucho: We are both aware that things of 60 years old can be sweet. I agree about confidence in Melinda. She can ace anything. The next two weeks will be very special and an entertainment coup. I'm sure Clive is already planning what to record with Melinda. She is quite a catch for any label, and she doesn't like to make waves.

IMO both Blake and Jordin have their work cut out for them just competing with Melinda Doolittle.  Quite a challenge.

Here's some of the lyrics to 'Wishing on a Star.' I think most of you know that Beyonce covered this a while back...

I'm wishing on a star
To follow where you are
I'm wishing on a dream
To follow what it means

I'm wishing on a star
To follow where you are
I'm wishing on a dream
To follow what it means

And I wish on all the rainbows that I see
I wish on all the people who really dream
And I'm wishing on tomorrow, praying it'll comes
And I'm wishing on all the lovin' we've ever done

Another reference to rainbows--so there seems to be somewhat of a thread to Kat's performance last year. We'll see whether Jordin can match Kat's 'SOTR'--though I think she just may come close. As Kat does, Jordin can take lyrics like that and make them seem more important than they appear on the surface.

Anyway--thanks for the article showcasing the homecoming of the Terrific Three. I played back some of the videos they offered on those local sites--and most of them are horrible quality. But it was interesting to hear Blake's self-penned song he sang in Bothell, WA yesterday. That's only available there as an MP3. It makes you wonder if he'll sing his own song for the third personal pick this coming week. That would likely make a huge impression on voters--despite his own song having enough beatboxing to shake a stick at.

I caught the video of Jordin visiting her high school in Arizona. That gym gave me remembrances of Kat's homecoming at NDHS--and appeared to be about the same size if maybe even smaller. There shouldn't be any judging on how big the crowds are, because it all depends on the general attitudes or traditions of the town.

Based on what I could tell, Melinda and Blake didn't get gigantic crowds for them either. Actually, Blake's outdoor concert looked like at least 1,000 people there--so he may have had the largest crowds. I didn't play the vid for Melinda's homecoming. She may have the biggest considering she's from a major city.

After last year's experience on the 'AI' board--I think it's likely the Clive picks won't be known until Monday...if the media chooses to release that information. Usually, they keep that a secret until we see the pre-taped meeting with the contestants and Clive on the Tuesday show. Last year, though, we got word that Kat would sing 'I Believe I Can Fly' on the Monday before the show. Sometimes that's through second-hand sources (and people going undercover) because of 'AI's CIA-level enforcement on spoilers.

I'm sure that at this point Clive is salivating at the prospect of signing at least two of the competitors. He should really give them songs that would challenge their abilities to see how they would handle that because once a new recording artist gets into the real world, everything is a challenge. Melinda has been out there on a professional level, so the other two will have to bring it in order to stick around. It's all very interesting.

I probably need to find that "beating a horse swarming with flies" smiley here, but I couldn't help thinking of Randy's comment to Katharine about IHN and here he up and hands Melinda a Whitney song? After all his crabbing about comparing yourself to the greatest singer in the known universe? Well, last week she was Tina Turner... or was that Gladys Knight? I can't keep up. I guess next week she can be Whitney. And I'm not ragging on Melinda, I'm a fan. I'm just a Katfan first and sometimes my memory is too long. Probably to make up for the times when it's nonfunctional.

Not just Kat, but almost every singer ever on AI, Randy doesn't think anyone should ever sing Whitney (except maybe LaKisha). Too bad if Whitney releases an album and wants to plug it on AI by being a mentor! No one would be allowed to sing from her songbook! Ha!

I'm looking forward to this week. I haven't had this many favorites in the top three since Season 2 - Kimberley Locke, Clay Aiken, and Ruben Studdard.

Good luck to Jordin, Blake and Melinda - it will be fun!

I feel the goosebumps already, if Mel knocks that out of the park, she'll be at the Kodak next week.  That's a beautiful song, and I can't wait to hear it!

Yes, Co, it really happened for me. I felt all the goosebumps possible, hearing Melinda sing IBIYAM. Only Melinda could have pulled a song like that this year. I was really hoping Randy Jackson would chose a WH song, and I'm glad he did.

Movie actors like Paul Newman, Jimmy Stewart, Humphrey Bogart, Katharine Hepburn, Lauren Bacall and Bette Davis make me want to live in the era they lived but I could have been just as inspired even now while I watch their work in films.

Sorry, but if there's anyone at all who's over rated this year, it's not Melinda, for sure.

I'll comment more in the AI Pool thread but...I thought everyone did a really good job last night.  The Top 3 show was better than last year's.  I don't know if anyone had the SOTR moment that we'll be seeing in commercials next year but I think the 9 performances overall were much better than last year's set of 9.

"I saw Katharine McPhee when there were about 12 contestants left on American Idol. She blew me away. I loved her grace, her style, her poise, her voice and her hair! I wanted her to be the face of Sexy Hair because she represented everything that I had in my head for the brand: youth, beauty, talent, class, a young sophistication, and sexiness." -- Jim Morrison, CEO of Sexy Hair Products.
