This is Mattsie reporting on the Girls Night Out on May 13, 2007 7pm-10PM in Everett, WA (listed as Seattle)

C O M P L E T E    R E C A P

The Everett Events Center was slowly filling up with a lot of teens, mothers and children at 6pm. Demographics: 90+ percent white kids, ages 7 to 25-ish -mostly girls. Hilary Duff would not be performing, so the order of singers were: Lily Allen, Katharine McPhee, Fergie.  Lily opened the concert at 7pm with her reggae-calypso-ska style of song with very minimal whole body dancing movements.  On the other hand, Fergie closed the concert at 10pm doing 3 or 4 cartwheels, holding the mic. Katharine's spot to be in the middle was rather ideal. The curiosity and level of excitement was still building up at that point and late comers would have arrived already, so it might have helped Kat collect all her fans in one place to cheer their idol up. My only regret was having no cameras with me for my own keepsake. That was unusual of me, but it happened. Sorry. But thanks to Jammer and Phee for uploading and posting Kat's videos on youtube.

Intermission-
Katharine's segment came after Lily's performance, but only after an intermission. It was Jubal & the Ball Flags (a group of drag queens) and their performance of the Weather Girls "It's Raining Men". I guess since it was mothers' day, the song would sort of suit the occasion. Suddenly, Sanjaya (wearing a black leather jacket) came out holding a mic, waving his hand, saying thank you. It felt awkward seeing him on stage with the rest of the cast singing and dancing and him just barely able to move the dance steps. He didn't say anything else and he just stood there for maybe 5 minutes. The cast apparently needed him there as props for one man that had rained upon them. It actually looked more of a parody to me, realizing that Sanjaya's body is not really the typical hot male and yet the show picked him among other possible candidates, as he was already popular among teenage girls. He would reappear after Fergie's performance, together with the KISS cast and crew, being introduced by the emcee as the newest member of KISS(?) Sanjaya didn't host the show. His appearance was rather staged up- in a sense, (as in being acknowledged to be Seattle's very own famous idol finalist), to create more zest among the crowd, but he was received very well. You could tell the audience loved him too.

Katharine-
A beautiful soft jersey cloth banner/streamer with Kat's CD enlarged cover photo with her name was hoisted up against the backdrop to create her stage. Titillating screams would burst out intermittently as the show was waited upon. Only three mic stands were on stage. Kat was to sing without the band being present but just the backup singers. Music was pre-recorded and piped in for Kat. Who would need an elaborate setup if it's Katharine? The emcee was taking pride introducing Katharine, and I got excited.

Then enter Katharine, singing "Feeling Good" a capella, looking gorgeous and very attractive in a low neckline purplish blue satin miniskirt dress and high heeled shoes, healthy, leggy, and energetic; her dark hair wavy at the end worn long down her shoulders. The camera just adored her as seen on the large plasma screens. It was an ecstatic moment once again to see Katharine in person. She surprised me with her energy---vocally and physically. I thought I admire her so much from Idol days and the idols concert tour. Last night, I was loving her (presence/performance). I couldn't get enough of her. If I could only sit there watching her sing and dance all night long, I'd do it.

From the "Feeling Good" intro, she continued with Love Story, followed by "Dangerous", "Over It" "Mary Jane" (by Alanis Morissett), and "Open Toes". She expressed how grateful she is for "being in Everett". The applause was deafening. Washington adores Katharine! She would walk the stage from one end to the other, at times in a walk-run speed- and imagine, in high heels- singing and dancing at the same time. Amazing! She was teeming and exuding with self-confidence and pride. And, you could tell those legs are strong dancer-athletic legs from the muscle tone, which is why they're beautiful. She just knew how to deliver the goods, and she succeeded. She greeted all the mothers a happy mothers' day, mentioning her mother being present in the audience, and then, she introduced her 2 backups as her girlfriends.

She rocked in "Dangerous". Surprisingly, this song was instantly a hit in the concert. The choreography and dancing were decent and entertaining, yet Katharine's moves were not exactly the demure kind anymore. This time, it's definitely sexy, but classy.  Dance moves that you've never seen her do before, including pelvic gyrations and some mild body thrusts, and a sudden drop to knee bend position. In fact, I was musing to myself that she could create a female Elvis impact on concert goers if she would continue to do what she does and she remains accessible like this (in concerts). She did her set brilliantly like the Katharine-vocalist that we know. I felt so good and so proud, with a big smile on my face the whole time I was watching, thinking "Go Kat Go". Before Kat sang "Over It", she told a little anecdote about an old boyfriend of hers named Kevin who was "a total jerk" and how it is so over between them now. I thought that must be her genuine feeling when singing the song.

Katharine sounded and looked like a seasoned performer because she is. She owned that stage. I talked to two teen-agers and they told me they liked Kat's version of "Mary Jane" better than the original. I couldn't agree more. Mary Jane might just be the highlight of Katharine's segment and possibly the whole concert to an older audience like myself. Kat sang it very beautifully. She reached those high notes very effortlessly and with beautiful control on the lower register. I think she ought to record and release that song. It was perfect for her voice. It was an incredible rendition, from the vocal standpoint. Katharine McPhee is undoubtedly one of the great singers and vocalists of our time. (Simon would have said, "based on that performance alone, you could win american idol. That was a vocal master class." Simon isn't there anymore as Idol is over for kat, but I would love for him to have watched the concert. He could beat himself for declaring Taylor Hicks instead, for once and for a change, but it's too late.) Kat dedicated that song to all the women in the audience, especially the mothers.

The last song was "Open Toes" and the performance showed how well she works with other dancers and singers (her backups). Very coordinated. I'm very impressed. WOW. I'm still dazed by that concert. I'd really like to have a DVD of that event. For the price of the ticket, it was a superfantastic concert! Enjoyed it ! Loved It! I had so much fun seeing Kat in action again!

Lily-
No Lily banner on the backdrop but there was a band present for Lily. More wind instruments too. She appeared less animated wearing a sleeveless black and white dress and sneakers, her dark long hair pulled back and tied. Her reggae/calypso-ska type of music intro set it all up for the waiting audience and I was anxious. Lily was singing long lines of words at times, but with a pretty tone, though. She didn't dance much but made some body gestures to jam-rhyme accordingly. The band was awesome. Vocally, at least Lily is better than Britney Spears in vocal maturity, so even without dancing, she did her thing.  Immediately, I felt it would be a fun night because Lily's music is the type that would set your mood to jam and groove when you're just sitting around with a couple of beers and some peanuts. You wouldn't even need to look at the performer maybe, you could just find yourself jamming along with your hands, feet and body. After the first couple of songs, she announced that Fergie and Katharine are coming up shortly and in a humble manner, coyly she said, "by the way I'm Lily Allen". But of course it was not my whole idea to find me converted into Lily's music as to go crazy with my applause beyond appreciating. So, it actually came to a point when it was almost boring towards the end, as the 5th song sounded repetitive of the previous. Lily didn't attempt to sing differently. Sorry, but that attitude came to me from nowhere. I guess I was too ready and long overdue for Katharine at that time to linger along any longer.

Fergie-
Fergie's segment finally started after a long playing of maybe 5 or more recorded urban music. People were getting wild and restless with loud whistles and screams during the wait. It took a while to set up the full band instruments on stage. Then, Fergie, with a tiara on her long blonde locks and wand on her hand came out wearing a printed gray shirt top and a very short silver skirt and sneakers, dancing, prancing, screaming "happy mothers' day". The crowd went wild with louder screams, whistles and applause to a standing ovation for those on the floor during the Fergie set. There was a song when I just looked around to see a lot of kids jumping the whole entire time of that particular performance. I realized and recognized immediately the other type of crowd that came to the concert---to see a hot blonde taking on rap/urban music. Kids love Fergie for the kind of vibe they get from the music and band and the more-of-acrobatic dancing team. My only untoward impression was the guy that sings duet with Fergie because he sings louder than Fergie. The other times I've seen (on video though) something wild like this were concerts by Michael Jackson, Madonna, Britney, and Kelly Clarkson, and possibly others too. So, this event was rather catered to the younger audience and how appropriate to show it on mother's day. Young kids could bring along their chaperon-mothers. It was a bright idea by the KISS 106.1 of Seattle. I mentioned earlier about demographics. It's true of concerts in the northwest  to find northwest crowds looking more white kids than others. There's no racial tone or bias or other meaning to that, but just an honest observation. I was truly entertained. Like Linda, I dig a concert like this as well. There are various types of concerts and audiences. Of course, for the likes of Whitney Houston and other accomplished artists, it would be much different as the crowd would be drawn from those interested in hearing more vocals and rendition than feeling the beat and hype that comes naturally in concerts. And, it wouldn't really matter if they are old or young. I dig that kind more, actually. In other words, I enjoyed the concert, but I came to see Kat and I really enjoyed her show. But Fergie's performances were just electric, even for a non-fan, I must say. Sorry this recap took more space than planned.

Looking forward to the details, Mattsie. And I hope Linda and Jammer will give detailed reports later. Jammer just HAD to have said something meaningful to Kat during his meet & greet without ...

Thanks so much for the review Mattsie! I've been dying to hear about the concert from someone who was actually there. From the video I saw today Kat really looked like she had it all down pat! I loved those dance moves of hers and everything looked as if it went down well synchronized and rehearsed. I just wish we could get a video with better sound and less screaming, lol!

A big THANK YOU, MATTSIE for your wonderfully detailed report.  It's so much better seeing her live in person. Her personality does shine through in concert when I saw her at the Jimmy Kimmel show. Glad you got the opportunity to see her and bring back this super recap!

And TQ Phee for bringing Kat's amazing performance of "Mary Jane" over here.  I just heard Kat's version for the first time ever. Wow! I agree with ya, this is the kind of song she should sing and record.  The style of her performance is reminiscent of "Home" and "Better Off Alone" which are also amazing!!!

We are definitely working together -- working on a record together. She sings so magnificently, it's just amazing -David Foster-

Hi Phee, Greg, Minnie, nmore 54, Amanda,

I edited my narrative. Please refer to the original review a little farther back. Thank you.

I'm only happy to bring to you the report, and I'm glad I went to the concert. Unlike Linda, I arrived at 6pm because I was still out on the road trying to get my camera from home. Unfortunately, I got caught in traffic and I had to return as fast as possible to be on time, without the camera. Well, I didn't get to meet with Linda this time, but like Linda, I went to the concert to see KAT, which is why my review was all about Kat first. I have to make sure we get all our attention to Katharine most of all. But Linda was right about Lilly's and Fergie's individual performances. Fergie is received by the youth, teenagers and kids very well as Madonna is very much enjoyed and well understood by guys and gals my age. The concert was more or less well-distributed as far as styles are concerned. Each performer has her own platform. Lilly does well with the reggae-calypso, and Fergie does well with rap/rock. But only Katharine could give the audience a genuinely satisfying doze of pop-ballad-r&b concuction very, very well. Ready to get knocked out by Katharine, the great singer? Read the recap!

Thanks to you all for the kind words. I'm very motivated, you see. I hope I was able to tickle your fancy a little bit.

I'll speak a little louder in case you've lost your hearing at the show, Mattsie : THANKS FOR YOUR DETAILED WRAP-UP OF THE SEATTLE SHOW!!!

Well, I warned of the loud sounds there that likely made even Peisha deaf for the next two days. But that isn't Kat's fault--because her show isn't set at jet engine decibel levels. And the screams from the audiences are inevitable. Nevertheless, based on Jammer's video--the acoustics are pretty darn good in the Everett Center. I've never been in there before, so I would never have known.

I was hoping you would have had the chance to meet up with Linda and Jammer--then have a chance to meet Kat and Peisha too. But there's going to be other chances. The best chances for all of us will be when Kat has an extensive U.S. tour that plays all the major cities. It appears she won't be in my stomping grounds this year--and likely not until her second album is out and hopefully selling like crazy. Her summer this year is going to be devoted to cultivating her fanbase overseas now.

Yes, Kat's a cappella opening with 'Feeling Good' was a brilliant idea. At least we finally saw what's supposed to follow (i.e. 'Love Story' ). That's a perfect transition and perfect way of conveying where Kat is in her life right now. I've seen the videos of 'Dangerous' with those dance moves. I didn't think they were overly provocative, but still different from what Kat's done before. Mostly it involved arm movements and a little hip thrusting--yet done with some kind of indication of good taste. Kat manages to make any dance move look classy...especially since she likely invented those moves herself.

Thanks to Jammer for the vid of Kat singing 'Mary Jane.' Some great up-close camera work there (plus minimal shakiness ) when it appears he was sitting quite a way back. That performance is the kind of thing Kat should be putting on a CD and making money off of. Her ability to re-invent older songs is just beyond what anybody else out there can do. It's enough to make Fergie sweat in places she shouldn't while on stage.

Thanks again, Mattsie! We can only imagine what a full two hour show with Kat will be like now. She's going to have sellouts in every city once she finally gets to that stage in (hopefully) another year.

Hi Greg,

I have just added my recap on Lily and Fergie on the same narrative I did for Katharine. I guess it's rather better that way than separating them. Now, it's complete, although it took a longer space.

I hope Bill and Minnie wouldn't mind that. Only once in a while I post something long like that, so please excuse it, and thanks.

Thanks, Greg, for your comments. It's true, I can't wait till I get to attend a full 2 hours long Kat's concert all by herself. That would be some evening for us Kat fans. Too bad you were not able to attend it. However, the vids could at least help show portions of it.

But you know, it was much different in the venue than what I could only hear audibly from the video clip. The sound system in that Everett Events Center is much better than that in the Tacoma Dome. And, again, I was also seated close to the speakers, same similar spot where I was in the Tacoma. The only better difference for me then was I had a camera, so imagine my regret and self-blame this time. Ah, well. enough said.

Now that I've seen her again, Maddie, this new oxygen tank could only take so long as you know it, ha ha. Joe, you see what I'm talking about? Aha, that's right.

Thanks again, my friends.Enjoy!! --mattsie

Hi Mattsie! Much appreciation for this wonderfully descriptive review of Kat's performance set! I really felt as if I was there;especially after just seeing Kat's numbers on youtube. She is indeed so expert at engaging the crowd and owning the stage. You're so right about her newest dance moves being quite sensual!Love how Kat will suddenly drop into a deep knee bend.....those legs are not just beautiful;they are strong! It would be great if Kat were to record Mary Jane......that was one sublime vocal!! Kat is totally mesmerizing! Thanks again!

Thanks, Keefir1. I should mention that part too, in "Dangerous", where she did a drop knee bend position.....owing it to her strong and beautiful legs. A down to earth performer Kat is, as we now see her take the stage with complete confidence. And, how many times could you witness a singer perform with just the piano and give you this kind of impact, like in "Mary Jane"? Only true vocalist can. Katharine can give you that, hands down. That is also the main difference between Lilly's and Fergie's performance sets combined and Kat's performance set-- this vocal rendition of Mary Jane. It clearly showcased Katharine as the better vocalist of the three performers. I'm sure Peisha was so proud sitting (or standing) in the audience somewhere watching her daughter do what she does best and what she was born to do. What a better mother's day present could a daughter give to her mother than singing for her in front of a large crowd. My wild guess is that the venue (with a 10,000 sitting capacity) was filled about 80 percent. That's plenty!!

From mattsie:
It would be an honor and I'd be happy to do a recap on Kat's concerts anywhere if I could be present. I'd do it for the KatPack exclusively, you know that, even for free like this. Thanks zzyzx for the compliment. Being there at the concert was more than exhilarating-- to see another outstanding vocal performance by Katharine. She sang her heart out at the concert and I loved it! The videos don't show it all. You could only see half of her body most of the time, missing the legs part and how they move. But I saw all that. Katharine's body is so well and beautifully sculptured starting from her angelic face down to her size 10 feet. Thanks to Dan and Peisha McPhee! She also has a medium-large body frame, besides being tall, but looking so proportioned and coordinated with every body part. Now, let her wear that purple dress and show off her legs with even just a simple pelvic grind and upper body shake, then you have the real thing already. Just be careful because she is a singer and she could blow you away. Except for "Mary Jane", it's just a shame that the other videos didn't have the needed vocal clarity of the songs or perfect visual, but thanks to the videographer for the effort. It is very much appreciated.

Oh, Z, oh made me blah on. Thanks, anyway.
Joe, don't kill me if I overdid it. Maddie likes it this way, you see.  I'm sure you're glad for me. LOL.

WOW that recap was long but very very descriptive. Reading it I could almost visualize the whole event playing in my head. I can just imagine what expression Peisha had on her face when Kat came out to sing. Peisha was given a very good mothers day gift from Katharine and you got to love her for that. Sounds like you had a blast Mattsie but how could you not bring a camera? LOL just kidding I know you didn't have time to grab a camera because you were trying to get there on time to see Kat and that's very admirable of you giving up a camera but having the visual of the whole night in your head instead. I wouldn't worry because I'm sure photos will soon turn up aside from the ones we've seen from the KISS Media. The fact that you went to see Kat and show her love and support and had a great time, that's what important.

Hi BigShady and DiehardKatfan,
Thanks for your comment. Can you imagine me jotting down notes? That's what I did because I didn't have my camera with me, which actually gave me real time to appreciate the show better rather than operating the cam. I could have chosen to arrive late just so I could have the cam but the parking situation at the venue got me worried, so I didn't have much choice. Early in the day I was ready but I changed cars, darn! Ah, well. Yes, I had a great time, a blast, any how. Thanks, again.

Mattsie,

Don't worry about going on and on about this stuff.  Just wait until June 9th.  I'm predicting that I might write something kinda long about my evening in Sacramento with Katharine.  So sad you didn't get to see Hilary Duff.  I guess I'll have to let everyone know how that is.  I've got Hilary, Ne-Yo and Gym Class Heroes at my show.

Anyway...I don't think it's any surprise than Katharine was the most vocally gifted of the three performers you saw in Seattle (Everett).  Katharine is still more singer than performer but she's getting there as a performer.  The more comfortable she gets...the better her performing will be.  And she's definitely improved a bunch since Idol as far as working the audience in front of her goes.  I think she knew her real audience on Idol was the TV viewer and sometimes she neglected the live audience because of it.

Great to hear everything was enjoyable.  And that Katharine (most importantly) was fantastic.  Can't wait to see her myself!

"I saw Katharine McPhee when there were about 12 contestants left on American Idol. She blew me away. I loved her grace, her style, her poise, her voice and her hair! I wanted her to be the face of Sexy Hair because she represented everything that I had in my head for the brand: youth, beauty, talent, class, a young sophistication, and sexiness." -- Jim Morrison, CEO of Sexy Hair Products.
