Katharine just co-hosted a radio show called Top 7@7. There were tons of fans outside in the parking lot and she was signing autographs out there in the snow. I'm really happy to see that she is getting great support and that she knows Canada loves her. Tomorrow at the Idol Party she is singing 4 songs; Over It, Love Story, Not Ur Girl and Each Other. She also said that Each Other may be the next single. Over It is #4 right now. She left the station after OI was played.

Aw comeon! You've got to be kidding? It is even slower than Over It. Nothing wrong with the song but you have to have an up tempo song for the second single.  Katharine needs something to show off her fun, upbeat side, something to get the heart pumping and the blood flowing the feet tapping. Not another slow dance.

Good grief, I hope you heard wrong or this is just a gag or a feeler to get some response from us!

Unbelievably bad decision if this is true.

Do you think it just a McTeaser?  I would prefer an uptempo song...Open Toes or Not Ur Girl.

I really hope this is Kat just being goofy Kat and trying to confuse us or she has absolutly no clue herself.

She probably has no idea herself. It's a bit premature to discuss another single at this point. Over It hasn't even peaked yet. And no, I did not hear wrong. Don't shoot the messenger.

I'd like to offer a different opinion on that. Sorry, but I have to respectfully disagree w/ some of you. I've thought for some time now that "Each Other" would make a great single release. Yes, it's true that "Open Toes" is the most Up-Beat song on her CD, but that's not always what makes a "Great Single". There are other factors involved too, I'm thinking. Remember, Chris Daughtry's "Home" is doing GREAT, and it's not an Up-Beat song. One of the top rated songs on the charts right now is "Say it Right" by Nelly Furtado, and that's not a totally Up-Beat song either.

I've been listening to the CD in my car for months now, and I often find myself wondering what made them choose OI as the first single, and what other songs might also make good singles. I try to picture myself as someone who's NOT already one of us "Kat-Fans", and then listen to each song & picture it coming over the air, instead of from my CD. I ask myself, "Ok, now, how would 'this' song sound, if it was being played after song-X, on radio station-Y?" I've also spoken to a number of Radio Station folk's, (Music Directors, DJ's, etc), about Katharine & OI, as I call in & try to get OI played more often. I think that it all boils down to several points.

1) First & foremost... The song has to be Good!! I think that we're covered here, as I think that we'll all agree that WE think virtually everything Kat's done is GREAT! But it's not just us Katfans that the song has to appeal to, remember. It's also all of those fans who liked Chris, and Taylor, and Elliot too. And all of the other AI Fans. And let's not forget all of those who may not have even watched AI last year! There's a lot of 'em remember, and THEY have to like the song too, or it's not going to take off!

2) All of the radio stations Exec's & DJ's have to think that the song has a chance of appealing to their "Target Audience", before they'll even consider playing it. YOU can like the song all you want, but THEY are the ones who decide if it gets any airtime!

3) I've shared the CD with a lot of my friends, and many of them have said that they think it's a great CD, and wonder why they haven't heard more of the songs before then. When I ask them what songs they liked the best, Each Other is almost always mentioned as they talk about the whole CD. Most will also like Over It, Love Story, & Home, or they'll also like Love Story, Open Toes, and Not Ur Girl, or perhaps another group of 3-4 songs. But,... my point is,... almost ALL of them mention Each Other as one of the songs that they really liked a lot & that they thought she really "gets into" herself! It's got "Wide Appeal" to a lot of people! Which takes me to #4...

4) Katharine has to be able to perform the song Live, on a wide variety of TV shows & appearances, and "Sell It" to whatever audience she's performing for at the time. I think that she had a problem w/ this when OI first came out. I saw many of her early Live performances of it, and I got worried because it looked to me like she was struggling w/ it a little bit sometimes. But, when I saw her performance of Each Other during the AOL Sessions... I thought that she really,... REALLY,... "Feels" that song herself. And that's VERY important! She has to have PASSION about the song! She has to FEEL it, in order to get whoever's listening to it to "Feel" it too. The song has to be able to REACH OUT & GRAB the listeners, stop them in their tracks or pin them in their seats, and make them WANT to listen to the whole song! They have to "Feel" the song right along with her! "Each Other" may not be Up-Beat, but it's got "Gut-Wrenching, Soul-Filled, Passionate & Emotion" to it. And that grabs people!

Now, you can argue that Open Toes is so up-beat that it gets most people up & dancing, or at least tapping their feet,... and you'd be right! It does! What's more, she did an EXCELLENT job on performing it Live during the AOL Sessions recordings, as she did with Love Story & Home, too. But, a lot of people are going to criticize Open Toes right away as being nothing more than a "Silly" song that just happens to have a good beat. They'll say that it's just about some girl buying shoes, and claim it doesn't have serious enough lyrics to make it worth listening to,... unless you're going out dancing. I'm concerned that's going to hurt her in many listening circles. Each Other is basically a WONDERFUL "Love Song" that Katharine seems to really FEEL,... and who doesn't like a great love song?! Eh?

5) The song has to translate well into a Music Video of some kind. Open Toes might work well in this, but what are they going to do? Have her prancing & dancing about in a short skirt wearing open toed shoes? Ok, yes, this might work for some folk's, but for how many? And for how long?? I don't know if Each Other can be done well in a music video either, but I think... if it was done right,... that it might make a very good video.

There's probably more, but I think that I'll stop here for now. Heck, maybe "Love Story" should be the next single. It's also a great Love Song, but it's more Up-Beat than Each Other... She performed it GREAT during the AOL Sessions, and would probably do an excellent job of it in a Live performance... it would likely make a great video too... soooo... perhaps "Love Story" would be best choice as next single? Hmmm...

I guess I'm just thinking that many of you are selling "Each Other" short, just because it's not an Up-Beat song, and I think that's a mistake.

That was very well written and after getting over my initial shock about this I actually went back and listened to Each Other and you are right it is a good song. I always just felt it was the weakest on the CD but I really don't anymore, that honor has fallen to Dangerous. Good song but I would have much rather of had the Ryan Leslie songs even without ever hearing them.

But to your point about live performance, you are dead on. Her early performances of Over It were rough for 2 reasons. Not only was it her nerves and playing with a new band but it was playing a difficult live song as well. Her Love Story performances showed she can be a good live performer. But in the case of Each Other, to me it was the highlight of the AOL sessions. The band added a new feel to it that I loved. It gave me a new appreciation for the song.
In the end I will certainly support what ever single she releases as I am a fan and love them all, but I will say I'm still hoping for Not Ur Girl and the fact that she is performing that live tomorrow speaks volumes to me. It is the first time this song has been even mentioned by Kat really and maybe that has been the plan all along.

Those are all excellent points, Sold.  I've always been a fan of EO, and a friend of mine who I got to buy the album says it's his favorite.  I do think it would make a good single, but I just feel that the next single should be uptempo.  I think it's time to shake things up a bit.  That's where Open Toes comes in.  The more I think about it, the more excited I get about the possibilities.  I fully expect OT to just blow up on radio and take the country by storm.  I don't think the lyrics will hurt it one bit.  They might be a bit silly, but they're fun and fit the song well as just a fun dance track.  And I think it's the right time too with summer coming.  I think the success of Over It has allowed for RCA to take a risk here and go with OT and run with it.  And on the off chance that it doesn't catch on I think EO or NUG could swoop in and save the day.

ETA:  Doncha just love how every thread turns into a discussion on what the next single should be?

What she is saying is that all those tracks are slated to be singles, and if they don't work out, then the next one is released right away, but Over It is starting to hit big on many markets. It's #4 in Canada on most top 40 charts.

I love "Each Other," and I love how Kat fans spazz out when they discuss what the next single should be;  I find it highly entertaining.   "Over It's" got plenty of life left, it's just starting to get play on some stations, so it'll be around for awhile yet; meantime, let the "next discussion single' continue . . .

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I just noticed that today's the first day OVER IT posted negative spin on Mediabase. That means OVER IT isn't getting any new radio stations. I hate to think that OI is going to slide down the chart in the next few days or weeks unless some dramatic change happens. The upward move of OI is so slow that HOME of Daughtry will surpass OI next week, probably. I have been requesting OI in a lot of radio stations and voting on XM, Sirius, and KIIS. It's so frustrating that other stations won't give it a chance. I was hoping that OI will get into top 20 or top 15 before it retires. Aaaahhh, it only goes to show that it isn't easy to have a hit single! But I want Kat to be the next POP STAR! HELLLLLPPPPPPPPP!!!

Oh, ye of little faith.   Quit worrying, Kat's got plenty of time to be a Pop Star, '"Over It" isn't the end all-be all of her album.  So, keep doing what you're doing and say a prayer for Kat too, she could always use more people praying for her safety and well-being.

OK, OK, OK....let's keep Daughtry out of this.  Here's some simple facts.  Over It has done better on the radio than both Christina's "Candyman" & Hilary Duff's "With Love".  Those are better comparisions since they are, in a sense, Katharine's "competition".  Now you say it's gone negative in its move.  And that is true.  However, if you look closer with this the reason for that is that some of the stations that have played OI well over 100 times (some over 200) are dropping off.  That's why she's dropping.  But she's still gaining in some places and she's bounced around before.  I remember the panic when she was around #34 for the longest time.  And she had a week that was pretty flat and it looked like the song had peaked.  The next two weeks it exploded up the charts into the mid 20's.  She gained over 700 spins in those two weeks.  Now I don't see that happening again but I think it'll hold fairly steady for another couple of weeks (maybe drop a spot or two as Daughtry & Rihanna move past her) and all of that.  She'll likely peak at #21 on Sunday afternoon and then start a slow decline.  There's nothing wrong with this.

I could give you tons of numbers to show you how well the song has done on the radio.  And you are correct, it isn't easy to have a hit single.  Although I've seen magazines call Over It a hit single so...it just depends on your definition of what a "hit" is.  Does it have to be #1?  Well, Kelly Clarkson has never reached #1 with any of her songs (outside of her Idol single...doesn't count for me).  The highest she's gone is #2.  As a matter of fact no Idol has ever reached #1 on the Hot 100 with a song of their actual CD.

And another nugget.  Over It is the SECOND-HIGHEST charting single (Hot 100) from a non-winner in Idol history!  Only Daughtry's "It's Not Over" has placed higher than OI's peak of #29.

Final thing...of course it's going to start to slide down the charts.  Everything does eventually!  OI's been out there since early January!  It's been 3 1/2 months since it debuted on the radio.  It's had a very nice run.  And of course it hasn't jetted up the charts like Daughtry's "Home" is.  "It's Not Over" built slower than "Over It" did initially.  But now that Chris had a multi-platinum album and a Top 5 single (#1 in Pop airplay) under his belt...of course all of these stations are going to add it immediately.  But you know what?  Kat's second single will be added quicker too because now they know there's an audience out there for her.  Maybe it won't rocket up like Chris because she doesn't have the double-platinum record but it'll be a faster build than it was for Over It.

As for the second single.  I don't have a problem with Each Other at all.  I just think it would be odd to follow up Over It with another midtempo song.  Albeit this one more in the R&B vein compared to Over It's Pop vibe but...here's the good thing about Each Other.  It's a really good song for her to perform live.  It was her best song at AOL Sessions.  I worry about her doing Open Toes.  When you listen to just the audio of that from AOL Sessions...it's a little rough.  And it's interesting to me that she isn't going to sing OT in Toronto.

I'm holding out hope for Not Ur Girl but....I could live with Each Other.  Anything but Dangerous is fine with me.
