Has anyone else noticed the 'whimpyness' of this year's fanbases? Doesn't it seem that last year at this time (even earlier) that the SP, KatPack, and others were powers to be reckoned with? This year it seems that the votes are performance driven, while last year the fan bases seemed to be doing the driving. Or do I just have an out of kilter perspective from being so deeply involved last year?

As a comparison, last year at this time KMF was very active and had been for months. This year, Jordin has a few fan sites, but they're deader than perverbial doornails. Plus Chad hasn't been able to scare up much more than tumbleweeds at IdolsWild. The only action seems confined to the AI board and IDF.

(Greg contemplates whether to throw in an obscure Popeye reference about that W(h)impy character who does nothing but eat hamburgers all the time...)

I haven't been on the 'AI' board this season, but I'm not sure if the fanbases are really all that whimpy, Bill. It's hard to gauge exactly what's going on out there in developing fanbases until you get to the Idol tour in the summer and see who gets the loudest screams or signs. Even that doesn't give one a full picture, and the reactions kind of depends on demographics, of course. In Portland, it was obvious to me that 80% of the crowd was crazier than hell for Chris and Taylor. Kat was still wildly popular--but didn't get the insane screams Chris and Taylor got. In other cities, that differed--such as California I guess.

Prior to that, a lot of people on the 'AI' board were worried sick that Kat's fanbase was too small to get her to the top on 'AI.' I kept telling them that there was definitely unheard voices out there who were major fans of Kat. They were of all ages too. She probably persuaded a lot of the "blue hairs" (I hate that term) to get out of their chairs or beds and vote for her after she sang those old standards. Those people mostly don't go on message boards either. Ditto for a lot of younger people, too, who are just too busy to bother with it. So I knew Kat's fanbase was tremendous. Part of it is silent for reasons I already stated.

I'm guessing the same process is happening with the ones on 'AI' this year. From what I can tell, Jordin and Blake have the most organized and biggest fanbases right now. Maybe Melinda does too--though it's probably with older people. As with Kat, many of their fans probably don't want to go on the 'AI' board and just let their phone votes be enough. Some people who vote need to go on the 'AI' board to let everybody know they did it and show some kind of vocal support. That's the way I felt myself. But everybody's different in what they're satisfied doing.

We'll just have to wait and see what the reactions are to the Idols on tour this summer. Also, the chart placements of all these contestants will be interesting once again. The basic consensus seems to be that Blake would have the highest album sales based on being different from everybody else. Melinda will end up placing high on the AC charts primarily...and Jordin will have immediate Top 40 success from winning 'AI.' (Yes, I'm pretty sure she will.)

OK, I think last year the mere presence of the Soul Patrol forced everyone else to be more organized and outwardly devoted to their favorites.  When you've got Taylor going SOUL PATROL, SOUL PATROL, WOOOOOO! every week it kinda makes you want to let everyone else know that the others had fans as well.

I don't really know how the fan bases for this year are at work.  I didn't really know last year either until after the fact really.  All I knew is what I saw on television.  But it did seem like there was more passionate support for last year's group to me.  Probably because the personalities were bigger and more clearly defined.  This year's group (now that Sanjaya is gone) might be just as talented as last year's but it doesn't have near the star power.  Plus there's no real underdog story.  I guess Melinda is sort of but she's such a well-trained professional she can't really lean on that too much.  I suppose Phil has a good story but I don't think anybody thinks he can win.  And LaKisha just isn't that likeable.

So you're left with probably the two most trained ones as favorites.  Jordin & Melinda.  And Jordin has the bright personality and all of that but because...maybe because the power this year is in the girls?  I don't know.  I'm searching here.  It seems like the boys get more vocal support than the ladies.

In other words, I'm not sure but I agree with your general feeling on this Bill.

I wanted her to be the face of Sexy Hair because she represented everything that I had in my head for the brand: youth, beauty, talent, class, a young sophistication, and sexiness." -- Jim Morrison, CEO of Sexy Hair Products.

It's a totally different feel this year, the Soul Patrol was just loud and outspoken on the boards.  Actually, there's one VERY organized fan base - the Blaker Girls  - they have an official website, sell T-shirts with proceeds going to charity, and have a MySpace site with over 4,200 friends that's constantly sending bulletins with news, viewing parties, updates, etc.   Blake definitely has the most organized fan base this season.

The KatPack or Soul Patrol, I don't recall having an official site at this point in the competition or being as organized with T-shirts and the whole bit.

Blake has a pretty big, organized fanbase. 'CAKE' fans stick together too, so I guess you could add Chris in on that. Jordin and Melinda don't have very organized fanbases from what I've seen, but they have their fair share of fans.

Do I dare ask what a CAKE fan is?

Any time I've looked at the "numbers visiting" on IDF, Katharine's forum always has more people than anyone. Not sure what that means, but there sure must be a lot of on-line interest in her. But it could have something to do with the fact that site is a little like a visit to the zoo--noisy, wild, and fun as hell.

CAKE = Chris + Blake fans  aka (A Teen Girl's Dream)

All CAKE fans will have to wait for the AI Tour now, but I think CAKE is like last season's Chris & Ace.
