I'm on later tonight because I sat for nearly an hour listening to the Top 20 songs chosen from the first (and maybe last) 'AI' songwriting contest. After listening to them all carefully (and reading along with the lyrics)--I have to say that 90% of them seem to nearly run together into one giant pop/inspirational power ballad. That means seeing more than one contrived lyrical line such as
"This is my big night....Give me wings to fly"
, etc., etc.
Not that there's really anything wrong with those type of lyrics per se--but it'd be nice if the judges could pick more songs that reflect the same sentiments, though in more creative ways to make things different. The song I intended to send conveyed a strong, emotional human journey from a completely different perspective from the usual.
Well, outside of all the power ballads you'll hear there--I picked two that are quite creative and would be my personal choices. Those two songs were 'Secrets and Lies' and 'Next Big Thing.' Go in there and give those a listen and see if you don't agree. They're both lyrically and melodically creative compared to the others there. 'Next Big Thing' would be great as an 'AI' single...not only for the creative chords/rhythm--but because it sort of slyly ribs the whole process itself. 'Secrets and Lies' gives a different spin on the 'AI' human journey too.
Outside of those--there's two power ballads that sort of haunted me: 'Someday' (effective long lines) and 'I'm Going to Be Me.' And there's two "standard" power ballads that 'AI' would probably automatically choose if it wasn't for the voters: "This Is My Now' (nearly identical to Taylor Hicks' 'Do I Make You Proud'...along with a Taylor sound-a-like on the demo) and 'One Night.' That last one is similar to Kat's 'My Destiny' last year.
Overall, I didn't give a 10 to any of the 20 songs. Only 'Secret and Lies' and 'Next Big Thing' were given 9's by me. The rest I mainly gave 6's and 7's to. Plus, it was disconcerting to hear that most of the demos are more than a little professional and done in high-end recording studios. At least 'AI' tells you to not let that determine who you vote for...despite that probably not doing any good.
Hearing these gave me a better idea what they're looking for if they do this next year. And what 'AI' looks for is pretty much the kind of songs we've heard on there before: Power ballads laced with syrup.
Here's the link below for you to go listen to the songs and vote. You can only vote once per email address...

Ugh ... this contest sounds like a publicity stunt. Despite the loud chorus of complaints about the uniformity of the coronation songs, the show's producers create a songwriting contest where the final choices all fit into that mold? And the demos sound like professional recordings? I wonder if these submissions came from songwriters the show has worked with before...
What does the winner get, anyway? If it's just recognition, that can't be much of an incentive; I can't imagine that having the winning entry alone would be enough of a career boost. Is there a decent amount of prize money involved? Royalties? I'd want the chance to work shoulder-to-shoulder with top songwriters, arrangers, and artists in the industry, or maybe a guaranteed number of songs to write on a major artist's album.
And what happens if one of the finalists pulls a Taylor and refuses to sing one of the winning entries?

The winner is supposed to get a $10,000 advance--plus any royalties made (later in the year) on the success of the single. That's far from bad...especially when the success of the song is guaranteed. All the prior 'AI' singles went to #1. Though that success is probably relative when you realize the #1's were only for one week...and then plummeted like an anvil. Only the media hype gets those cheesy singles to the top. But, for the songwriter, that would mean probably a cool million or more made in royalties by the end of the year. Not bad for a starting songwriter. You even get to put "hottest in the country" next to your songwriter name.
Ok, we have the good parts out of the way. The catches were numerous...if confusing with all the legalese. To be honest, I read the contract thoroughly and didn't like everything I read. That didn't dictate my decision to not submit this year, but it might affect what I do with the contest next year if I decided to submit the same song (or a different one) next time. The biggest negative that was spelled out to me was that 'AI' retains ownership of your song (in fact ALL in the Top 20) for 10 years. Of course, some on the pro side say that could be good...considering 19E might pick from that reserve to give a song to one of their other artists on the roster. That's certainly a possibility I didn't think of before. The immediate general consensus was, however, that your song would be sitting gathering dust in the 19E file bin for a decade when you could be out promoting it elsewhere.
There were some other minor details that I didn't quite understand 100% because of the usual obfuscating way of writing contract legalese. They did have an email address where you could ask questions about it though. But if it's a legal question, I doubt it'd be answered just by email.
Outside of the negatives, I think it's still worth doing. The Top 20 songs are exposed now to the public on 'AI's site too--which would get the notice of other artists who may want to get dibs on that material. I sort of doubt many artists would want to sing more than half of the Top 20 chosen on that list. Unless it's an inspirational type of album--most of those songs are cookie-cutter power ballads. As I said above, only two REALLY stand out as something original. I guess there's a few of the power ballads that would still work well with a decent singer such as Jordin or Melinda.
One thing about it: You're not signing your entire career to 19E. You can still write other songs and market them elsewhere. It's only the one song you gave them for the contest that they own the rights to.
Oh, and if Jordin, Melinda or Blake refused to sing the winning song...they're only dissing the public who voted it in for them.
Hopefully the public can pick a song better than the 'AI' producers can.

I hope Next Big Thing wins...That's the one I can tolerate the most (The most professional and definitely the least corny), and it would be perfect for Melinda!

That's about the only one that left me with so much as a memory of the title.

It has to be 'Next Big Thing' (or 'Secrets and Lies') to save the creative integrity of this contest. If one of the cookie-cutter power ballads wins--then 'AI' has set the bar at the lower end of the rung...and ultimately sets a precedent for all other cookie-cutter power ballads sitting and gathering dust in file bins across America to be submitted next year.
I'll pass on submitting one of those, thanks. Though just to get your foot in the door in professional songwriting--it may be worth the creative sacrifice. I could probably crank out a song like that in about an hour. Lyrics for those type of songs can pretty much be cobbled together using the same type of lines over and over.
Yeah, I agree that Melinda would sound great on 'Next Big Thing'--because it has a bit of a jazzy touch to it that she excels at. Though Jordin could probably do well at it too. It's just that a jazzy-sounding single may not do as well as a straight-ahead pop ballad. I see Jordin doing a soaring pop ballad instead at the finale.
I didn't stop and think: Are they actually going to choose two here? As before, the runner-up also gets a new song to sing as a single. That means if the two I want to win go through ('Secrets and Lies' and 'NBT')--then Melinda could get 'NBT' and Jordin could get the more pop-oriented 'S&L.' Though 'AI' hasn't made it clear if they will choose two from the Top 20. They've just said it'll only be ONE song chosen. Somehow I think the songs in the Top 20 are actually a pool to draw from in the event they need a new song to use. No wonder they want to keep them under contract for 10 years.
Voting apparently ended tonight--so I hope you all voted for the more creative ones. Based on my ears, I think it was more than obvious which ones could change the contest for the better and which ones won't.
