If everybody's ratings were dipping, I don't see how anyone could get upset about smash's doing the same, except, of course, that fewer viewers are fewer buyers for advertisers' products, in an absolute sense. And of course people watching later sometimes have the option of skipping ads, which I'm sure sponsors are aware of. Although Comcast doesn't do that, at least not for its more popular shows--you get a message stating that some features may not be available during this viewing, so you can rewind and watch again, but you cannot FF and skip stuff, i.e. ads, entirely. I'm talking about On Demand. If I watch my tape, they're just not there, period.

Is Smash definitely returning mid-season (Jan/Feb), or is there a chance that the show will be part of the fall lineup?

We don't know anything yet. The cast has mentioned that they've been told they will start filming the second season in July, which seems to say an earlier start to the 2nd season.

The Voice finishes a week before the Smash finale. America's Got Talent's premiere episode will be the lead in the last week. Hate to think what that will do to the ratings.

Barlo, AGT got 15 million viewers and a 4.3 rating in the demo last year when it premiered at the end of May. So the ratings will probably be very, very good for AGT, especially since Howard Stern is being introduced as a new judge. So AGT will do great and the likely audience spillover in the first 15 minutes of Smash will probably make for high ratings in the first half hour for Smash like it did with its premiere. The problem is ABC premieres The Bachelorette that night, from 9:30 to 11. Last season, it premiered with 9 million viewers and 2.8 rating in the demo, so it may pull away some Smash viewers or it could get crushed by AGT in its first half hour and AGT will pull up Smash for B's last hour.

Not a good ratings night. CBS took the 18-49 demo, ABC took overall viewers, almost lapping NBC 14:8 or thereabouts. too bad folks, you missed a lot of good stuff last night. Maybe they'll record and watch later... +7s always seem to pick up quite a bit... The Voice was evidently down as well, which probably did not help.

10:00 CBS Hawaii Five-0 2.5/6 10.76
ABC Castle 2.4/6 11.38
NBC Smash 1.8/5 5.40

Latest thing I read on ratings when I was looking for +7s. This is wk of april 23.

Monday at 10 p.m. ET, "Smash" (2.0/5 in 18-49, 6.0 million viewers overall) grew versus the prior week by 5 percent in 18-49 rating (to a 2.0 from a 1.9) and 1 percent in total viewers (6.008 million vs. 5.950 million), for “Smash’s” biggest overall audience in three weeks (since April 2). This week’s “Smash” is #2 in the time period among ABC, CBS and NBC in adults 18-49, 0.1 of a rating points out of first place, and #1 in adults, men and women 18-34. "Smash" has now delivered NBC's 12 highest in-season 18-49 ratings in this time period since January 31, 2011.

This week’s "Smash" beat NBC's time-period average this season prior to "Smash" by 100 percent in 18-49 rating (with a 2.0 vs. a 1.0) and by 55 percent in total viewers (6.008 million vs. 3.864 million).

This is why the critics should stop moaning about NBc being sorry they gave it a second season.

Not spectacular for the night, close to last week.

10:00PM ABC Castle 2.5 7 12.562
  CBS Hawaii Five-0 2.3 6 9.240
  NBC Smash 1.9 5 5.918

The Voice, DWTS, CAstle and 2-1/2 Men seem to be the top for total audience, NBC took the night for 18-45 demo.

I hope all those people tweeting about how fantastic the finale is tweet enough people to get the numbers up. It sounds like it's going to be, well, smashing.

Latest from tvbythenumbers. I hoped for better but at least the viewership seems to be decent.

10:00 CBS Hawaii 5-0 (season finale) 2.7/7 11.29
ABC The Bachelorette (Premiere) 2.5/7 7.71
NBC Smash (season finale) 1.8/5 6.06

I still get confused trying to differentiate between these numbers and the explanations they provide never make any sense to me.

The first number is the demo rating for 18-49 (estimated % of 18-49 watching), the second is the share for that demo, and the 3rd is overall viewers. So for the prelim numbers, no rise in the demo, but a rise in overall viewers. I'm kind of disappointed, but America's Got Talent didn't do amazing numbers (its premiere was similar to The Voice's performance finale last Monday). It was a very competitive night with various CBS finales including Hawaii Five-0 and the Bachelorette premiere.

I get some of it, but share and rating sound alike to me in their definitions. It sounds like they're saying both are a percentage of total numer of watchers, so what's the difference? Seems like there is a core of 6 to almost-6 million which then rises to 8+ when they count the people who watch it later than Day One, and this has been fairly consistent.

The godlike dominance of the 18-49 demo also seems weird to me, because I personally wouldn't buy something just because I saw an ad on Smash, nor would I have when I was a kid watching Star Trek (back in the Jurassic Age). I suppose they have some kind of figures to back this up.

Groucho, the 18-49 demo is harder to reach for advertisers so they pay a premium when someone can round them up. They feel the older folks are easier to reach and sell to, so they pay less.

Final numbers: No adjustment in the demo, remaining 1.8. Total viewers adjusted down from 6.06 million to 5.96 million. That's still up from last week's 5.72 million.

I thought the theory was just the opposite, the 18-49ers were supposedly less set in their ways and easier to influence, so advertisers were more willing to pay for ads aimed at them, seeing us old fogeys as kind of a lost cause.

Anyway, I found this article talking about problems in ascertaining anything for sure, given modern tv viewing habits, such as a tendency of a lot of people to DVR things and watch later, and ways to frustrate advertisers by bypassing them. Thought it was kind of interesting.

Groucho, yes the theory is that 18-49ers are easier to influence, but it's felt they are harder to reach because they don't watch as much TV, or at least traditional TV.

At least networks/advertisers are starting to pay some attention to the fact that nowadays, a lot of shows get watched after the initial airing. If advertisers could figure out how to keep people from skipping over commercials, they'd have an even better picture of the number of viewers, and more reason to take this into consideration. I watch a lot of things on On Demand, which seems to show some but not all of the commercials. I don't know how they decide what to keep and waht to drop, but it seems like I get a lot of ads for other shows on the same network. I loved Awake once I got into it and it seems to have disappeared forever. Does anyone know which universe that poor guy was "really" living in? I don't. Anyone?

Adjusted up a tenth in the finals to a 1.2. Still not great for such a solid episode. I'm hoping the DVR stuff adds a great deal to its ratings.

The previews have been great. Don't understand this at all. The Voice couldn't have made that much difference.

I think a lot of it is that NBC is doing so poorly since The Voice and Football went on hiatus. There are no eyeballs to see the promos. Going up against the Bachelor probably hurt a lot too.

And I wouldn't hold out too much hope for DVR ratings to be substantial but we'll see.

I have to confess that I forgot to tune in on Tuesday. I did see some promos, but life interferes sometimes.

If this level of rating continues, will the network even bother to broadcast all 17 episodes?

trsf, we don't know at this point. But NBC, particularly Greenblatt, loves Smash, plus all but two episodes have been completed, so I think they'll do what they can to show all the episodes. Whether the show will remain in the Tuesday 10pm timeslot remains to be seen. If it drops below 1.0 they may move it to Saturdays or the summer to burn it off because they have to protect the network. I think they will wait a bit and see how Smash settles into its regular 10pm slot.

I think The Bachelor probably put a major dent in it. The 9 months between seasons probably hurt a lot, as did NBC's poor showing during mid-season up until then. Plus, the first season may have left a lot of people dissatisfied and many possibly weren't paying enough attention to the reported changes to be curious enough to turn back in. I think the Voice did prop it up a lot though and it did change nights, which isn't always easy.

The 3rd episode ("The Dramaturg") got a 0.9 in the 18-49 demo and 3.29 million total viewers in the final live + same day ratings. Its lead-in The New Normal at 9:30 also got a 0.9. TNN's lead-in Go On at 9 got a 1.1. NBC's Tuesday lineup (and nearly their whole lineup across the board) has turned to mush without the Voice, which returns in about 4 1/2 weeks.

So far we've heard nothing about the show being pulled from the schedule. We have seen a rumor that NBC is thinking about putting The Voice's Tuesday episodes on at 9pm instead of 8 to help Smash, but that's strictly rumor for now.

Final ratings for the 4th episode, "The Song": 0.9 in the 18-49 demo (no change), 3.04 million total viewers.

And in the live + 7 day ratings, the premiere got 1.9 in the 18-49 demo, a rise from the Live + same day rating of 1.2

From BroadwayWorld.com:

2/26 show from half-hour to half-hour actually grew from 2.977M to 2.995M. NBC also announced that Smash is currently the most upscale drama of all four newtorks. That is conentration of adults 18-49 living in homes with $100k+ annual incomes, as measured by Live + 3 day DVR ratings, scoring an index of 161, up from 150 last season. 100 is considered average...It is clear that NBC is looking for any positive news that advertisers will like. The type of ads that would run for $100k+ households might be differenent than those under that and maybe just a sliver of hope that could keep Smash on the air. Who knows.
