can't remember if we've seen this here yet. I had to laugh when the author slipped and did what I've done I don't know how many times and referred to her character as Karen Carpenter. No, this is ANOTHER brunette singer with a nice smooth voice you could listen to for hours on end.

And yet another take on Smash with some interesting observations. I don't think the Karen vs. Ivy thing is going to stay absolutely central, although they are of course playing it up early on to generate interest with this obvious conflict. The dueling divas thing is just too dramatic not to feature, but of course the show can't be nothing but that. This looks like the TCA as well. Take that, all you short-sighted casting directors in the past five years--Steven Spielberg had faith in the girl from reality tv. Now that she's talking, it sounds like she just had the perfect training to ger her in the proper mood to play Karen--lots of rejection, coming right on the heels of that great Over The Rainbow start, which someone so aptly stuck in the pilot.

Well, here it comes--this writer isn't falling for the McPhee charm or voice or by god ANYTHING! She's an interloper on Broadway! Off with her head! I'm sure her comment about katharine's voice focuses mostly on her rendition of Beautiful, and I can understand that, but I did not feel that Katharine got overshadowed by Megan Hilty in the end duet. It's not actually the MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) they were at for the premiere, it was the Met (Metropolitan Museum of Art). MoMA was where they showed the pilot to their Broadway compatriots. |

"Beautiful" is sort of like that, because as some have pointed out, it's a rather odd audition song, although it fits perfectly with Karen's state of mind, which is doubtless why they used it. |

Someone somewhere pointed out that Messing's character's husband is a house husband which I didn't pick up on in the pilot. If you listen to his dialogue in that vein, he's not "berating" his wife. He sounds very much like a wife left behind while her husband is off doing fun and meaningful things. It's an interesting take, I think. Sometimes situations are better highlighted when the genders are reversed.
I suppose I should have made this comment on that site, but I didn't want to sign up.  |

That's the drama of "Smash" — honest, but dazzling and magic, with brand-new songs and dance. For the viewer, it borders on the miraculous. Who wouldn't want to get into this act?
BTW, Barlo, from reading the original pilot script it seemed that Dev had been a "fan" of Marilyn since boyhood, but I can't quote his exact comment on a family site. There were a LOT of changes from Showtime to NBC. That's what they meant about losing some of the "edge" but broadening the appeal, I guess.

I haven't seen that so...cool! I haven't made a complete run through everything so it's likely I've missed a few things. Kinda nice to have TOO MUCH Kat stuff to look at after a long time of not having enough.
It's funny but I'm kinda nervous about the TV ratings! All the positive press has me thinking really good things on that front but then I don't want to be disappointed. Ahhhh! I'm worried about having the pilot out there for three weeks hurting it but ultimately if people love the show and stick with it all season that's more important than the first week numbers and I know NBC will know how many times it was viewed online and take it into account when they get the ratings.
It's all a lot of fun. |

On January 30th, Barlo wrote that someone had commented on Julia's husband being a "House-Husband". I'm not sure if that is correct, because today I was reading an article about SMASH in the Boston Globe, and it said that he is a school teacher. I guess it remains to be seen who is correct. |

I am so hopeful that SMASH is a smash and runs for many seasons. I am just concerned about how long Katharine will be involved in the show. I have heard that subsequent seasons could be about the creation of new musicals. What happens if Karen gets the role of Marilyn ? What if the season ends with Marilyn - The Musical, being a smash. What will Karen (Katharine) do next season? It's a something I probably shouldn't worry about, but I do.

Luckiestar, I think Frank was a schoolteacher but stayed home for awhile to raise their son. As for subsequent seasons, I think the producers are planning to have the cast stay together and do new musicals. In real life, a Broadway actor usually stays with a show 6 months or less and then someone else comes in, at least these days, so I think even if Karen ended up with the part of Marilyn, I think she can easily move on to something else after a few months.
As for ratings, I think if it can at least stay above what NBC is usually getting with its shows, I think they'll be happy with it. |
